The Sunport: now available as a DIY solar carport kit

The Sunport is now available as a kit – the full timber frame, pre-cut with all the hardware, the engineering, and a build guide, delivered for your own contractor to raise in a day or two.

We started Kingdom Sun in 2024 with only a mission statement: to make solar more beautiful, multi-use, and accessible.

Since the launch of the Sunport, customers have been asking us for a DIY solar carport kit. After over a year of building them ourselves, we're officially answering the call: the Sunport is now available as a kit, delivered to you ready for assembly.

By handing the build over to you and your contractor, we're continuing that journey of making beautiful, multi-use solar more accessible.

What's in a solar carport kit?

Your solar carport kit contains the entire Sunport frame, plus an easy-to-follow build guide:

  • Locally harvested, pre-cut timbers
  • All connecting hardware
  • Structural engineering (stamp optional)
  • A detailed build guide
  • Metal roofing (optional)

Your contractor puts in foundation piers based on our schematic, then it's 1-2 days of assembly and the roof is ready for your solar installation. You can hire your own solar installer or have us do it – again, the choice is yours.

How is the Sunport kit different from others?

A cursory search for DIY solar kit returns endless low-priced options, ranging from wood to vinyl to metal.

A metal or vinyl kit might win on price. But they are built to a budget, not to the weather: these are the structures that buckle under a heavy snow load, peel up in a windstorm, and chalk and yellow after a few hard summers of sun. When one fails, you don't fix it; you replace it. Pay for it twice, and the cheap option stops looking cheap.

A heavy timber frame is the opposite – it just stands there, year after year, taking the seasons in stride. Our wooden solar carports are engineered for truly apocalyptic weather: up to 95 pounds per square foot of snow, and 120 mile-per-hour winds. The storm that flattens a flat-pack carport is the storm your Sunport rides out.

Kept off the ground, under its own roof, a big-timber structure is still standing long after the cars beneath it have been traded in. The extra you pay up front is money you simply don't spend again.

A DIY solar carport that doesn't burn you

There's a smaller comfort that metal can't match.

Steel and aluminum are excellent conductors of heat – park under a metal carport on a bright day and the posts get hot enough to cause a serious burn.

Wood does the opposite. It barely moves heat at all, so a timber post standing in the same sun stays comfortable. The same frame that rides out a snowstorm is the one you can rest a hand on in July.

The car underneath appreciates it too – shaded by timber instead of baking under a metal lid, it stays cooler, which is easier on the paint, the dash, the seats, and the battery.

Local timbers, local economies

We believe in harvesting regional timbers for each Sunport. This supports local sawmills and gives working forests a reason to stay forests.

Cheap DIY solar carport kits use box-store lumber or transport heavy timbers across the country. We cut from where you're building – Eastern hemlock in the Northeast, white oak through the mid-Atlantic, Douglas fir out toward the Rockies and the Pacific Northwest.

The timbers stand on post-bases and piers, never in the dirt; they live under the roof, out of the weather. Kept off the ground and under cover, a heavy timber frame is something your kids can inherit – more than you can say for something made of thin metal or plastic.

Bring your own builder

If you've priced a DIY carport with solar panels and balked at how flimsy or uninspired it looked, think of this as the timber-frame carport kit version of the same instinct: you bring the labor, we bring the part that's hard to get right.

By shipping you the frame and letting you hire locally, our wood carport kit puts money back in your pocket.
